چکیده مقاله:

Background Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a deadly X-linked recessive disorder. This genetic disorder affects 1 among 3,500-5,000 males in the world. The majority of the patients are male, due to the type of inheritance. It affects most of the skeletal, the respiratory, and cardiac muscles, causing these vital organs to contract and eventually mortality. Materials and Methods This study was performed on two boys of 7 and 9 years old with DMD, which were belonged to one family who was consanguinity married. These tests were conducted during a year including LDH, cK, AST, ALT, MRI, EMG, NCV, and MLPA. These tests evaluate the production and function of dystrophin proteins in muscles. Results The amount of cK and LDH increased during one year of study in patients. According to the positive family history of hydrocephaly and anencephaly, MRI patients were normal. Regarding the fact that the patients have DMD, the result of EMG and NCV showed Myopathy. MLPA test identified duplication in 56-63 exons. Conclusion This study investigated the duplication mutation in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) in two members of the same family. Other mutations such as duplication and point mutations consisted of a small percentage of the disease. Therefore, it is recommended that programs of the prevention measures and pre-marital genetic counseling be specifically trained by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education and relevant organizations.

Scoliosis in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

espite recent research developments, Duchenne muscular dystrophy remains a fatal neuromuscular disease, affecting two to three boys in 10,000. It is an inherited X-linked recessive condition caused by a frameshift mutation in the dystrophin gene at the Xp21.2 locus of the X chromosome. Dystrophin is a large cell-membrane protein involved in calcium transport in the muscle cell. Boys with Duchen...

P164: Adeno-Associated Viral Vectors in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (BMD) is an inherited X-link disease. The incidence of this muscle-wasting disease is 1:5000 male live births. Mutation in the gene coding for dystrophin is the main cause of BMD. Most cases of this disease succumb to respiratory and cardiac failure in 3rd to 4th decades. The slow progression of BMD and recent achievement of gene therapies make it as an appropriate c...

Duchenne muscular dystrophy An overview of Duchenne muscular dystrophy

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) affects approximately 1 in 3,500 live male births [1]. It is caused by a large variety of mutations in the dystrophin gene. Because of these mutations, the body can no longer make dystrophin which is a protein important for stabilisation of the muscle cell during a contraction. Without dystrophin, muscle cells are damaged and slowly replaced by fat and scar tis...

Carrier detection in Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Serum creatine kinase, myoglobin, and percentage lymphocyte capping was determined in ten patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, 12 carriers (nine definite and three probable), 16 other female relatives, and eight normal controls. There was no detectable difference in lymphocyte capping ability between any of these clinical groups. Significant myoglobinaemia was present in all the affected ...

Sir, I read with interest the paper by Mollica et al.1 and should like to add the results of our prospective study for comparison with other Mediterranean countries on 37 HBsAg mothers who were found among 1002 pregnant women attending a maternity hospital. Although 3.7% of the mothers were positive for HBsAg, only in 0. 1 % of cord blood specimens was HBsAg demonstrable by counter electrophore...

Novel mutation in exon 56 of the dystrophin gene in a child with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Duchenne type muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an allelic X-linked recessive disorder caused by mutations in the gene encoding dystrophin. Genotype analysis has shown that deletion mutations account for approximately 65% of all cases, and 5-10% are duplications, while the remaining 30% of affected individuals may have smaller mutations, including point mutations, small deletions or small insertions....
